Totally tubular chitin
نویسنده
چکیده
Totally tubular chitin lies create uniform tracheal tubes by molding them around an expanding chitin filament, according to Anna Tonning, Anne Uv, and colleagues (Göteborg University, Göteborg, Sweden). Uv’s group suspected that chitin may be involved in shaping tracheal tubes after observing that a chitin synthase mutant forms tracheal branches that look like sausages rather than uniform cylinders. Branch cell fusion junctions were always constricted, with the intervening regions always grossly expanded. Indeed, fluorescent microscopy revealed that chitin normally accumulates within tube lumens during tracheal development, forms a filamentous cable, and uniformly expands to push branch cell fusion junctions outward while preventing overdilation of the remaining epithelium. These results are consistent with two models. The chitin filament may act as a sponge. As liquid is drawn into the lumen during development, the sponge-like cable would then expand to uniformly push the epithelial cells outward. Uv, howF

Chitin in the Silk Gland Ducts of the Spider Nephila edulis and the Silkworm Bombyx mori
Here we report the detection and localisation of chitin in the cuticle of the spinning ducts of both the spider Nephila edulis and the silkworm Bombyx mori. Our observations demonstrate that the duct walls of both animals contain chitin notwithstanding totally independent evolutionary pathways of the systems. We conclude that chitin may well be an essential component for the construction of spi...
متن کاملControl of Airway Tube Diameter and Integrity by Secreted Chitin-Binding Proteins in Drosophila
The transporting function of many branched tubular networks like our lungs and circulatory system depend on the sizes and shapes of their branches. Understanding the mechanisms of tube size control during organ development may offer new insights into a variety of human pathologies associated with stenoses or cystic dilations in tubular organs. Here, we present the first secreted luminal protein...
متن کاملSeptate-Junction-Dependent Luminal Deposition of Chitin Deacetylases Restricts Tube Elongation in the Drosophila Trachea
The function of tubular epithelial organs like the kidney and lung is critically dependent on the length and diameter of their constituting branches. Genetic analysis of tube size control during Drosophila tracheal development has revealed that epithelial septate junction (SJ) components and the dynamic chitinous luminal matrix coordinate tube growth. However, the underlying molecular mechanism...
متن کاملEpidermal Stem Cells Cultured on Collagen-Modified Chitin Membrane Induce In Situ Tissue Regeneration of Full-Thickness Skin Defects in Mice
A Large scale of full-thickness skin defects is lack of auto-grafts and which requires the engineered skin substitutes for repair and regeneration. One major obstacle in skin tissue engineering is to expand epidermal stem cells (ESCs) and develop functional substitutes. The other one is the scaffold of the ESCs. Here, we applied type I collagen-modified chitin membrane to form collagen-chitin b...
متن کاملFabrication of Chitin/Poly(butylene succinate)/Chondroitin Sulfate Nanoparticles Ternary Composite Hydrogel Scaffold for Skin Tissue Engineering
Skin loss is one of the oldest and still not totally resolved problems in the medical field. Since spontaneous healing of the dermal defects would not occur, the regeneration of full thickness of skin requires skin substitutes. Tissue engineering constructs would provide a three dimensional matrix for the reconstruction of skin tissue and the repair of damage. The aim of the present work is to ...
